Establishing a methodology for the use of photogrammetry to aid in freshwater mussel surveying
At present, much of what we know about the world’s freshwater mussels has been conducted in shallow waters or in the laboratory. Studies of mussels in deep water have been largely impeded due to the lack of skilled divers working in the field. This skill gap not only means that deep water species have been largely overlooked, but it also means that we know little about the behaviour and distribution of mussels in deeper waters. To fill this gap, I am attempting to test the use of photogrammetry to improve the efficiency of surveying and tracking mussel population dynamics in deeper waters.
